Statement of the Workers’ Communist Party of Denmark (APK), March 20, 2004
The Spanish people and the global anti-war movement won an important victory when the national elections in Spain last Sunday swept away the war maniac and ex-Falangist José María Aznar and his ultra-conservative government. Like the Fogh Rasmussen government in Denmark, Aznar has closely allied himself with Bush and Blair and made common cause in the war against Iraq and the following occupation, which has been illegal and contrary to international law all along.
The barbaric terrorist massacre on workers on their way to work in Madrid did not make the Spaniards support the illegal war either. They insisted that the Spanish troops get out of Iraq. The terror in Madrid had a fascist appearance, no matter who is behind it. It was not the separatist movement ETA even though the Aznar government insisted it was, and even the UN Security Council branded the ETA as the perpetrator. The lie is being used as a weapon, but the Spanish people said: No more lies!
The only certain thing in Bush’s prolonged “War on Terror” is that it is war and terror that sets the international agenda, and that the world has become more insecure.
The world is still waiting for the investigation of September 11. It is highly improbable that the US, in a year of presidential election, will be hit by terrorist actions. Therefore, the terror bombings in Madrid are not really surprising.
It will not be surprising either if the war coalition in Iraq suddenly finds weapons of mass destruction, even though the weapons inspectors have scoured the country without finding anyone. The “War on Terror” is not least the war of the intelligence services.
The Iraqi and Palestinian resistance are not terrorism, but they are legitimate resistance against brutal occupying powers with US imperialism being the main force in the big global game for oil, control and hegemony. The same holds for Afghanistan, the first target of the terror war.
Now, the US, being in trouble in Iraq, and the EU countries that want more influence on the development there are trying to “internationalize” the conflict in Iraq, that is, to carry out an occupation within the framework of the UN. That will recognize the occupation, but it will not make the occupation legitimate. On the contrary, it will discredit the UN even more.
Fogh Rasmussen and his government is a government of war criminals, which has been obeying the US in everything. It will participate in the occupation until the bitter end. Unfortunately, Mogens Lykketoft [chairman of the Social Democrats, translator’s note] and the Social Democrats have stated that they will not withdraw the Danish troops either. The Social Democrats have made themselves accessories in the criminal policy of Bush, Blair and Fogh Rasmussen.
It is the ordinary Dane who pays for the illegalities, with soldiers and money that should be used for combating unemployment and improving the still more sickly welfare. The war is being waged for the rich, for the multinationals like Maersk Moeller, who has moved to the top 100 of dollar billionaires during the war on Iraq.
No more lies!
Fight US imperialism and its lackeys!
Stop the Fogh Rasmussen government of war criminals!
Bring the Danish troops home now!
